A new day, new site and new software

Yesterday I moved the blog to it's new home: a dedicated server hosted at iWeb. The zippy new server boasts a dual-core Celeron 1.8 GHz processor, a whopping 1 GB of RAM and 2x 80 GB SATA-2 drives configured in software RAID-1. It's a big step up from the previous server, which was a virtual server with only 512 MB of RAM, but I think I can handle it. :)

I also migrated the blog from Roller to Drupal. As a Java and JRuby guy, I really wanted to keep all my web applications running inside a Tomcat container. Unfortunately, I didn't find a Java-based blog/cms that offered me the exact combination I wanted of hands-off, easy setup and flexibility. I really liked the simplicity and ease of use of Roller, but in the end I discovered I wanted more out of the site than Roller could easily provide.

I know, Roller is open-source and I could modify it. Honestly, I sincerely wish I had the time to add the features I want to a product like Roller. Unfortunately, I'm far too busy right now and too focused on other projects to dedicate myself. Instead, it's far easier just to switch to a different product (like Drupal) and see how far it takes me.

I'm already running another site on Drupal and I've been thrilled with the community - tons of plugins, themes, etc. Fantastic!
